Today my Grandpa sent me this video. It is really very beautiful, but more than that it shows you how small we all are, in a way you may have never considered… and makes very clear what we are capable of when fighting over “a fraction of a dot”. Our speck in the universe is all that we have.

We should take better care of it.

Feeling Sluggish

I was out doing some weeding on our property this last weekend, when I cam across the largest slug I had ever seen!

Big Daddy

Frankly, I had no idea they even grew this big!!!

Since we haven’t found these slimers nibbling at our garden plants, I just moved this guy to the the far end of our yard.

If he turns out to be part of an army, I will be forced to set out a “beer trap” to lure the munchers away from my squash… but he was so cool, I was really hoping we could just co-exist in peace.

Not Your Grandma’s Tea

I usually post a recipe on Mondays, but with all the warm weather bearing down on us, I thought it would be a great time to talk about a summer tradition in our house…

SUN TEA!!!

Refreshing!

It was finally hot enough this weekend to put out our first batch of sun tea. Back in the day… my great-grandma used Red-Rose tea bags as the foundation for her summer beverage.

Today, there are so many more healthful & fun alternatives:

Green Tea, Red Tea, White Tea, Black Tea…. and then the flavors….

Our first batch was Passion Orange Green. It is out of this world!!!

And so simple to make…

Fill a Sun Tea jar with water. Use 6 “base” tea bags (your foundation tea… green, black, etc.) Add 1 flavor tea bag (lemon, orange, blueberry, cinnamon, etc.) Set in full sun outside for several hours.

When the tea has reached the desired potency, take it inside to cool and add your Stevia (or sugar), and refrigerate when it is cool enough to do so.

Remember to use organic, fair trade tea… and when sweetened with Stevia, Sun Tea will not elevate your glycemic index.

By not purchasing single serving tea, you are keeping bottles out of our environment… and every sip of tea has great health benefits for you and your family!

A Buggy Time of Year

It’s the time of year when pest after pest will invade your garden to consume or destroy it.

We have that very same problem ourselves. We have added a few fruit trees and a vegetable garden and it didn’t take but a couple of days for them to be viciously attacked. We decided to try some natural (non toxic) ways to get rid of these pests.

We finally shopped at this site:

This site has organic pesticides, natural predators, organic materials, and pretty much any clean-green product you might need for your yard. Got mosquitoes, no problem! Aphids… you’re outta there… with just a few click of your mouse and over-night shipping, you too can have beneficial insects of YOUR VERY OWN.

We ended up getting a few different types. We tried nematodes for our area, minute pirate bugs (we hear they are brutal pest hunters), and about 2,000 green lacewing eggs.

TWO-THOUSAND??!!

Yes, exactly. And they fit inside what looked like a tea bag.

We spread them throughout our vegetable garden, around our fruit trees, and all the native plants we have growing around our house.

We are very eager to see the results. We’ll share them with you.

In the meantime, see if this doesn’t inspire you to do a little organic pest control!

Not Just Oil in the Ocean

I went to the beach last weekend and while I was there I picked up trash that I came across.

This is half an hour’s worth…

Notice how most of this stuff is plastic… and TOXIC!!!

But the prize for the most interesting piece of trash collected that day goes to…

A sandal.

Oh, and what do you know? It’s poison plastic also!

Finding all of this really irritates me…. (and frankly) whoever left it in the first place I’d really like to give a piece of my mind!
